Re-pigmentation of the areola is primarily done to restore color to the breast following a mastectomy. It is the process by which a medical tattoo artist implants pigment into the skin surrounding the nipple of a breast following breast & nipple reconstruction due to breast cancer. The medical tattoo artist first draws on the areola using a custom blended pigment color that best matches the patients coloring then, after the patient and the medical tattoo artist are satisfied with the size, shape and color of the new areola, the medical tattoo artist implants the pigment into the skin.
The goal of areola re-pigmentation is to create the illusion of a three-dimensional, nipple/areola complex or can achieve a natural -looking effect when enlarging or perfecting the areolas that you have. These procedures, coupled with scar camouflage, will give you confidence and peace of mind in those intimate situations when you might otherwise feel uncomfortable.
The procedure takes about 30 minutes per side and is usually painless. If the patient feels any discomfort topical anesthetic is applied as needed. There are very few restrictions following the procedure and they are as follows:
